Description: A fusion of some serious Indica genetics in the Bubba and the Kunduz Afghani, the Haze element adds some hybrid vigor and variation in structure.  Overall though, the plants are very Bubba-dominant in structure, finishing at times with nearly black foliage and purple buds with large calyxes that form the signature “crowns” seen in the Bubba.  The dark green leaves look heavily Indica but the Haze really kicks in during flowering, when the plants stretch to twice their height and begin taking on the signature superglue-like smell of the 1994 Positronics Haze.

History

Story: The Kunduz Afghani used in this cross was found and brought back from Afghanistan — the Kunduz region is known as Afghanistan’s premier hash-producing area, making this plant an especially frosty specimen that adds its trichome coverage to anything it touches.  The name “Hanis” came from its Afg”hanis”tan roots.  This strain was created in Texas by a grower named “Tierra Rojo” who bred almost exclusively outdoors for a time, later moving into the Colorado medical marijuana scene, including an entry into the 2011 Denver High Times Medical Cup.

Growing Information

Flowering Time: 65 – 75 days

Preferred Growing Medium:  Grows well with a long vegetative period, topped and trained to form a multi-cola bush.  Hanis responds well to “super-cropping” and heavy training, but still normally stretches at least twice its height in flower thanks to the Haze influence.  Letting it go later (especially in sub-75 degree temperatures) will encourage the development of the deep colors and a more narcotic effect.

Patient Expectations

Scent: Interesting sharp smell that brings to mind superglue or acetone, it has a background of Bubba-like coffee/chocolate sweetness.  Its vaguely skunky and sharp scent pre-grind really explodes into a complex and acrid aroma once it’s broken apart, lingering on the hands and in the air.

Flavor: Very much like the scent, it has the same almost chemical glue attack, with a musky, hashy Bubba-like finish with notes of hash and earthy qualities from the Afghan.

Effects: The Haze part of the hybrid is apparent early on, as this strain has moments of raciness and an definite mood/energy uptick as its early effect.  Lots of eye pressure and a buzzing body move the experience on towards its more relaxing second half.  Quality muscle and mental relaxation blend with a sense of equilibrium mentally (both in mood and function), making this feel like a true hybrid for most of the experience.

R2 Medical Marijuana Strain Review

Appearance: (8.75/10)  A very unique-looking sample, it wasn’t readily apparent how high-level it was when looking at it from arm’s length because of the thick coverage of dull orange pistils.  It almost even had a brownish cast to it, but we were still entranced by it somehow.  The real magic happens when the bud is broken apart, revealing field after field of fat-headed, low-lying, and perfectly-preserved trichomes, which seem to have been shielded by the outer shell of pistils.  While there were a couple of stray thin guard leaves that could’ve been removed, we really found no issue with this sample — the harvest timing showed patience, as plenty of deep amber (almost burgundy) trichomes were visible amongst the sparkling clear ones.

Aroma: (8.75/10)  Pre-grind, this one was all citrus-pine Haze musk, with some backing sharpness that almost resembled garlic.  Once it was ground, it took on a definite sweetness and a mentholated, fresh quality which brought to mind the Jack Herer side of the Haze spectrum.  When we smell this one, it definitely makes us crinkle up our nose and/or make the “impressed face” almost involuntarily — it’s very pungent and distinct.

Taste: (7.25/10)  The taste was very similar to the post-grind smell, but just not as pungent or lasting, and added a soil-tinged element which seemed to override some of the more appealing qualities.  The initial flavor was dominated by the citrus-pine Haze qualities (again, Jack Herer came to mind), but the backing sweetness was also evident on the first hit, mostly fading away after that.  Despite that, the flavor through the end of the sample size retained its appeal even after losing the initial tastes, never tasting bad or overtly harsh.  This is an expansive smoke though and will make you cough if you’re not careful — the final ash was a medium gray with white flecks, indicating that the flush could’ve been more thorough.

Effects: A strong starter, this strain got on top of us immediately and sent the mind reeling, creating waves of pulsing energy throughout the body and filling the eyes and forehead with a pressure and slight heaviness.  Our hearts all jumped up in activity, racing at times, but never making any of our staff uncomfortable (which is uncommon, as racy starts almost always bug someone).  The very strong start came with some definite mental spaciness, but mostly because there were so many thoughts rattling around rather than any mental slowing.  The initial effects were very strong, but changed somewhat quickly, taking on a more productive but singularly-focused quality which had time absolutely flying by for most of our staff.  An interesting combination of mental energy/activity and body relaxation kept up throughout most of the experience.  As with many energetic strains, the comedown was a little drowsy comparatively, but definitely not in the sleep-inducing realm.

Medicinal Traits: (We are NOT doctors – personal opinion ONLY)  Energy, strong aid with digestive issues and appetite stimulation, pain relief, and body relaxation.

Overall: While the intense start might be a little too much for inexperienced patients or those who suffer from severe anxiety, this strain was a rare combination of mental energy (racy at times early on) and consistent body relaxation.  The initial potency was among the highest we’ve had in some time, almost reminding us of the early effects of earwax or other high-level extracts.  That short-lived slam of potency receded into a productive but lightly spacey state where we felt at-ease the entire time.  This was a very unique-looking strain and the other “bag appeal” areas were also very solid, bringing to mind other Haze-Afghani hybrids, but standing apart due to its potency and appearance.  This is not a pre-bedtime med, but almost any other time would be appropriate, as it kept us mostly active yet relaxed and pain-free… best for intermediate-to-experienced patients.

A.S.H. (Afghani Skunk-Haze)Medical Marijuana Strain Review

Appearance: (7.75/10)  This sample visually appeared to lean towards the Haze side of things, with an open, almost airy bud structure, teardrop-shaped calyxes, and multi-colored thick pistils everywhere.  Though many people would complain about the density, we saw it more as an evidence of its Haze lineage than something to complain about.  The dryness level was perhaps a little too crispy for our tastes, as these delicate flowers almost crumble when squeezed between the fingers, but again, it’s mostly a matter of personal preferences.  We thought that the harvest timing may have been slightly early as well, because the trichome colors were not very uniform and most were clear/cloudy (maybe 5% amber heads).  In all, this sample was attractive (especially to old-school strain lovers) and fairly well-done, but could have been improved with some additional time ‘on the vine’.

Aroma: (8.75/10)  The staff’s consensus favorite part of this sample, the aroma was a very classic-smelling mix of musky, skunky, garlicy, vegetal, and lightly fruity/sweet all at once.  The lightly sweet and fruity Afghani musk it broadcasts in the jar is rather pungent, but it increases further when ground and takes on more of the garlic dimension as well, always with the Haze spice in the background.

Taste: (7/10)  Flavor-wise, this strain was again a mix between the almost putrid, lightly sweet, fruity Afghan and slightly sharper and spicy flavors.  We didn’t feel that the smell came through to the taste as cleanly as we would have liked, we think this is partly due to the Haze-style bud structure containing a decent amount of leaf cover, which  brought added harshness and standard smoke flavor to the party.  The thick smoke that results from this one was moderately expansive and did hit the lungs a bit hard, causing some coughing at times.  The final ash was mostly light gray but had some darker areas that would not burn away, indicating that the flush could’ve been better.

Effects: We felt both parts of the lineage on this one pretty clearly, and it almost seemed to run the gambit of Sativa and Indica even between our review staff, with one member reporting heavily Sativa feelings, one somewhere in-between, and one leaning slightly towards the Indica side.  The start was clearly Sativa and Hazy in nature, coming on rather strongly to start, but seemingly building over the first 30-45 minutes, filling our heads with pressure, our chests with a fluttery, light, borderline rushy feeling, and a slight loss of vestibular senses (felt like we were moving or spinning at times, especially with eyes closed).  It definitely served to wake us up a bit with the potency, but it also cast a bit of a “sensory blanket” feeling over everything, and we just felt a little bit mentally slow despite the internal energy.  Still, we were able to function in more creative and less detail-minded tasks, and the relaxation feelings increased as it rolled past 1.5 hours.  The Afghani body effects seemed to come into play around the same time, serving to bring us back down after a rather ‘up’ beginning, but it never really made us drowsy or came with the crash we expected.  A long, slow decline following the end of medicinal-level effects around 2 hours carried us out to about 3 total.

Duration: Long, 2.5 – 3 hours (2 at a medicinal level)

Medicinal Traits: (We are NOT doctors – personal opinion ONLY)  This med served to increase our internal energy to start, as well as giving very strong ocular and head pressure effects.  Beyond that, we felt that it was good for body relaxation late, kept us mentally at-ease, helped with minor pain relief, and elevated our mood.

Overall: This A.S.H. is an example of some classic genetic lines in perhaps the “trinity” of genetic lines, Afghani, Skunk, and Haze.  The blend of these influences could be seen in all areas of the sample, from its structure, to its smell, to the effects.  We all enjoyed this strain but saw potential for better medicinal-level duration and better flavor lurking within, namely due to what we see as a slightly early harvest and not-quite thorough enough flush.  These flaws didn’t do much to dampen the overall experience however, and the mix of uplifting and ground effects from the Afghani and Haze parts of this strain were an enjoyable tug-of-war that ultimately felt like a great hybrid.  This is a good strain for those who appreciate the classic taste palate of Skunk and Afghani and desire a daytime mix of Sativa and Indica effects — we felt that the strongly cerebral and slightly rushy start would be a little much for inexperienced patients, especially those who suffer from anxiety or nausea issues.

Dutch Treat Haze Medical Marijuana Strain Review

Appearance: (9.25/10)  This was one of the rare samples that made it through a very long flowering period with no visible flaws — no tiny seeds, no hermie bananas, no trim issues, no harvest timing complaints — as hard as we tried, there was really nothing we could find to knock this one down a peg.  The nug structure is stout and compact, with a well-cured feel to it and the typical Colorado dryness level, where it breaks apart easily but doesn’t crumble into dust.  The trichome coverage on this strain is rather above-average, and the perfect golden-amber coloration on most of them shows that this was pulled at just the right time for our tastes.

Aroma: (8/10)  This one was apparently a personal preference, as one reviewer called it among his favorite Haze strain smells (along with the likely-unbeatable Tangerine Haze), while others were less impressed.  The pre-grind smell is a slightly sour, musky, spicy scent that was not exactly appealing, but hinted at potency.  Post-grind though, it changed character almost completely, turning strongly floral with a wonderful sweetness described as “honey and cinnamon”.  It’s never a super-pungent aroma, but it’s almost more attractive for that reason…

Taste: (7/10)  Again, there was a difference of opinion here, with the reviewer who loves the smell again loving the lightly sweet, floral Haze flavor this strain offered while others were left wanting for more pungency.  So if you’re a patient who appreciates the subtle flavors, this is one that you’ll enjoy.  However, the subtle flavor that existed on the first hit seemed to endure throughout the session, even on the final exhale, which is always nice. The smoke was expansive but fairly smooth on the throat, with only some coughing experienced.  The final ash was a mix of light gray and white, showing a quality flush.

Effects: Coming on quickly (less than 5 minutes after starting), we were immediately filled with a strange internal energy that had our chest fluttering and our skin and limbs buzzing heavily.  There was a definite uptick in anxiousness, with several of the staff getting a feeling like they were expecting something to happen or as if they were getting ready for something, though nothing was really happening — this one could definitely cause some anxiety issues in users who are prone to it.  Constantly shifting mental focus made it somewhat difficult to stick with conversations, making this more of an “alone time” Sativa than a social one.  The eye and forehead pressure seemed to keep up forever, barely starting to release into the start of hour #2.  The energetic (some would say “tense”) mindstate and body feeling subsided around the same time, taking on more of the Indica side of the family, seeming like the calm after an enjoyable storm.

Medicinal Traits: (We are NOT doctors – personal opinion ONLY)  Major energy boost, strong ocular effects, cycling head pressure, and some relaxation late.

Overall: While our review staff didn’t find a ton of medical benefit for their particular ailments and thought that this strain may serve to rile up anxiety and possibly even muscle tension early, we couldn’t help but to love this strain regardless.  The sheer power of the start along with the medicinal-level and overall duration reaching the upper rungs of MMJ left us impressed.  The bag appeal areas were somewhat contentious, but the reviewer with macro-level viewing capabilities appreciated it the most, showing that the details were all perfectly in place.  With what seems to be a flawless grow, this strain may be at its maximum potential, and it’s surely one that Sativa-lovers should give a try.  This is a very strong and pure-feeling Haze experience that is really only for experienced users and those who can handle the more aggressive side of the effects spectrum.

MOTHER’S FINEST STRAIN INFORMATION

Description: Released to high acclaim, Mother’s Finest is a very Hazey and Sativa-dominant strain effect, smell, and taste-wise, but still manages a short flowering time thanks to the addition of a secret unknown Indica with “maple leaf” traits.  The taste and smell seem to model themselves after the Jack Herer and/or Haze in most cases, giving off a spicy and lemony bouquet.

Growing Information

Flowering Time: Depends on phenotype, most are between 60 and 65 days, but some Haze-dominant phenos can stretch out into the 90 day range.  Jack Herer-dominant phenotypes tend to be in the 75 day range.

Preferred Growing Medium: Most phenotypes of this strain get rather tall and show Haze-dominant growth structure yet finish in a reasonable amount of time.  There are some Indica-dominant phenos that work well for SOG, but otherwise this is more of a SCROG type plant that responds reasonably well to training.

Patient Expectations

Scent: Mentholated citrus and pine with a spicy lean, very much like Jack Herer itself.

Flavor: Much like the smell, it’s a citrus-dominant Haze taste with some spicy pine elements and a mentholated, cool quality.

Effects: Very cerebral and spacey, this strain definitely calls upon its Haze lineage with its effects package.  Uplifting and somewhat energetic, it is a powerful strain that doesn’t leave mental processes unscathed — some distraction and spacing out is inevitable with this one.  Lots of face and eye pressure occurs with this strain as well, making it appropriate for those suffering from ocular issues.  Once the cerebral Sativa start died down, it got slightly relaxing and more sedate towards the end, uplifting mood and making for a smooth ride back to a normal state.
