Maui (CAM)

Written by Ry on April 5th, 2010. Posted in B+, Blog, Colorado Alternative Medicine, Reviews, Sativa, Sativa-Dominant Hybrid

From:  Colorado Alternative Medicine

Grade:  B+

Type:  Hybrid – Sativa dominant  (lineage is Hawaiian Sativa crossed with a Mendocino Hybrid)

Price: $50/8th Mix-n-Match

Appearance:  Very dry, nicely trimmed.  Fair amount of trichs but nothing “snowy” – did not possess a lot of Fall colors as a later harvest of Maui tends to do.

Aroma:  A little earthy, maybe a hint of a spice (like Halloween or Xmas spice).

Taste:  Not much on this sample, more hashy or ashy.

Buzz Type:  Strong, but not “knock your socks off” strong.  This Maui was nice for a beautiful, sunny day with a walk to the park a very pleasant experience.  I had increased auditory and visual stimulation, lots of patience for things going on around me, but I was still focused and alert.  The step down took place at just past an hour, and 30 minutes following that I was starting to notice mild irritations in my surroundings.

Buzz Length:  Medium.  1.5 hours

Medicinal Use:  (We are NOT doctors – personal opinion ONLY)  My neck felt great for a day in the park, plenty of motivation.  Easy medication if enjoying (or suffering) the company of non-medicating folks.

Overall:  This specimen is solid but not the best representation of Maui that I’ve seen.  With a choice of Maui’s at different places and a choice of some better strains at CAM, I’m not sure I’d buy much more than a gram of this one to get my Maui “fix”.  It was a very relaxing and mellow buzz and thouroughly enjoyable, but we’re critics at the end of the day and this wasn’t the best Maui on the block.

Matanuska (Apothecary of CO)

Matanuska Medical Marijuana Strain Review

From:  Apothecary of Colorado

Grade:  B+

Type:  Sativa/ Indica mix

Price:  $50-$60 8th member/non-member pricing plus tax

Appearance:  Average, reminded me of the standard “kind buds” we first saw in the mid ’90s (basic green, low to medium trich coverage).

Aroma:  Sour eucalyptus.

Taste:  Eucalyptus and dryer sheets, not earthy but harsh (way harsh from pipe).

Buzz Type:  A sativa no doubt, that took me from a lazy irritable state to one of alertness and content.  Sharp mind, useful conversation with extreme detail and musical inspiration.   A robust strain yet never overwhelming.  Gave me a smooth, linear experience and overall good feeling.

Buzz Length:  Medium. 1.5 – 2 hours (mush shorter duration from vaporizer, 1 hour at longest)

Medicinal Use: (We are NOT doctors – personal opinion ONLY)   Anxiety, stress, irritability and fatigue haven’t a chance against the Matanuska.  No recollection of pain and was even able to clear a slight headache.

Overall:  Though this one didn’t have the brute force that some prefer, it is a good Sativa/Indica mix with remarkable mood and spirit lifting qualities, a perfect choice for a day starter.  A slight deduction for duration and harshness and differing effects across both reviewers and reviews kept this in the B range.

Phnom Penh (The High Country)

Phnom Penh Medicinal Marijuana Strain Review

From: The High Country

Grade:  B

Type:  Hybrid. Sativa dominant supposedly (Powerplant x Thai x Haze or Cambodian x Thai x Haze?)

Price: $45/8th

Appearance:  Looked like some shwag until photographed, then it was one of the more intriguing buds I’ve seen.

Aroma:  Sweet tea and sage.

Taste: Not much but I did notice a hint of lemon/sweet.

Buzz Type:  Very calming, not overpowering and very much functional, but I was left a little agitated.  Felt like a good hybrid, or a conflicted Indica that let its sativa out to play (not exactly like the Sativa dominated buzz I expected).  I was able to stay motivated and sharp – productive.

Buzz Length: Medium. 1.5 hours

Medicinal Use: (We are NOT doctors – personal opinion ONLY)  Not a pain strain in my opinion. Good for anxiety and other psychological issues.

Overall:  I was very excited to try this strain because it seemed exotic, and it is. It’s very calm and steady and a good working strain but not one I would recommend for pain.  Might work for anxiety, and is a good morning medicine.
