MAUI WOWIE STRAIN INFORMATION

General Information

Type: Sativa-dominant hybrid

Genetics: Varies, the name is used for almost any Maui strain that made it out of Hawaii

Geographic Origin: Maui, Hawaii

Seed Company/Clone: Both — various versions exist, seeds are available from Nirvana, High Quality Seeds, and others

Description: Since the 1960′s, “Maui Wowie” (or “Waui”) was known as an especially exotic and desirable strain to cannabis connoisseurs the world over. While it’s unclear if the original genetic line is still alive and kicking, there are certainly many strains from Maui that are similar and capture the same smooth, citrus-pine taste and the enjoyable mid-level Sativa effects that it became famous for. As far as the dispensary scene goes, it seems that Maui Wowie and “Maui” operate interchangeably for the most part, with some plain “Maui” being distinguished from the Wowie by a more Indica growth profile and effect (at times this is called Hawaiian Indica as well). Maui strains are heavily Sativa in growth pattern, but the effect is generally mellow and clear-headed.

History

Story: Originally popularized in the 1970′s in pop culture by the likes of Cheech and Chong, Maui strains have retained an enduring reputation, especially with those who had it in its heyday. Whether the original Maui Waui still exists is up for debate — most seed varieties are of murky lineage and are most likely hybridized rather than landrace Hawaiian seeds.

Awards:

Growing Information

Flowering Time: 9 – 11 weeks

Preferred Growing Medium: Most Maui strains grow tall and lanky and may need support when flowering. The seedbank varieties are often hybrids containing Indica genetic lines and produce very well for commercial pursuits, growing more stout and dense compared to the pure Maui lines.

Patient Expectations

Scent: Some Maui is very tropical-smelling, with hints of sweet fruits and a floral quality — others (the ones with a greater Indica influence) have a more pine-dominant profile and are less sweet.

Flavor: Again, there is some variation between the purer Sativa-dominant Maui and the pine-scented one — the pure Maui has a softly sweet flavor while the other one has a more earthy pine flavor with a hint of lemon.

Effects: Though a well-grown and selected Maui may start rather strong, it generally will even out after 30-45 minutes into a smoothly energetic and uplifting experience. Known for aiding creativity, it’s also a good work strain once the initial potency passes, as mental processes are not affected and remain sharp. Maui strains can sometimes border on rushy body-wise, and normally will give a vibrating body sensation — not one for really relieving pain, it’s much more of a mental strain, providing aid with depression, anxiety, appetite stimulation, and migraines.

Name: Green Dream Wax

Type: Earwax hash via butane extraction, mixed strains

Price: $40/gram

Consumption Method: Titanium skillet through bubbler, Eclipse Vape through triple percolator bong

Visual: The thing that struck us immediately about this earwax is its gorgeous light golden-blond coloration, which says that this is a very pure extraction. Even at the microscopic level, it was very tough to see any kind of particulate or discolorations. Another thing that struck us just in terms of visual appearance is the pockmarked, crater-like surface created by the evaporation process — it made the flat surface of the piece we received look like something out of a sci-fi movie, as you can see in the pictures above. The texture is crumbly when handled and works best when scooped rather than picked up with tweezers, etc. Slight heating makes it a little easier to work with, but we’d suggest avoiding that simply because it melts at such a low temperature.

Smell/Flavor: In terms of smell and flavor, this was a fairly standard earwax experience for our crew. Most butane earwax tends to have a slightly floral lemon-pine quality to both the smell and taste, which we’ve come to recognize as essentially the taste of trichomes. This earwax sample had that in spades, though the flavor was slightly sharper than the aroma, bringing a more medicinal and slightly chemical (like cleaner) note in addition to the lemon-pine.

Consumption: When heated, this earwax disappears into a puddle almost immediately. When it even hovers over a hot skillet, it begins to drip into a non-viscous puddle and bubble furiously before disappearing altogether in a matter of seconds. In the Eclipse/Essential vials, it can leave just a slight brownish film on the glass, but it’s still among the cleanest-looking extractions we’ve seen, with no visible particulate.

Effects/Duration: Like many high-grade butane extractions, the effects of this one hit like a ton of bricks almost immediately, often causing a bit of perspiration and a ton of face/eye pressure. Despite the strong effects, it’s almost completely “stealth” in that the eyes remain wide open and there are no other signs of being medicated. Along with the pressure came a rush of energy and a seeming increase in visual and auditory acuity that had us all feeling very “dialed in”. A flurry of thoughts (some worthwhile, others just random) flew around the head, making it less productive at times initially than it eventually turned out to be. Body-wise there were lots of relaxing waves of energy going up and down the back especially — this certainly helped our reviewers who suffer from back pain and tension issues.

As it went on, the energy began to decrease a bit and we gravitated much more towards the couch rather than our feet. Like many uppy strains and extracts, this one came with a little bit of a crash as it hit 1.5 hours or so. The body relaxation kept up and even though we had less energy, it was still mentally active and clear-headed, making it good for a sedentary task.

Overall: This was thought to be an extremely pure and rather potent extract with a balanced yet very energetic to start effects package. We all appreciated the taste and smell, but really enjoyed the overall clarity and duration of the effects, which lasted out to 3 hours for one reviewer, and in the strong 2-2.5 hour range for the others. This is a great choice for higher-tolerance patients who desire a mental uplift combined with some quality body effects, primarily as a late daytime or early evening type of med due to the relaxing finish. If you re-medicate within 2 hours, it tends to shoot you right back up to the initial energy and effect level.

S.A.G.E. STRAIN INFORMATION

General Information

Type: Sativa-dominant hybrid

Genetics: Big Sur Holy x Afghani

Geographic Origin: Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Seed Company/Clone: T.H.Seeds

Description: S.A.G.E. stands for “Sativa-Afghani Genetic Equilibrium”, indicating that the mission for this plant was to provide the best of both worlds. Many believe that’s the case, as this plants has been extremely popular, with some elite selections being grown, cloned, and passed around for 10+ years now. While it is certainly a hybrid, S.A.G.E. is clearly Sativa-dominant, with some phenotypes going out to 80 days flowering. Its Haze-heavy mother shines through in the effect and the appearance.

History

Story:

Awards: 2nd place 2001 High Times Cannabis Cup – Sativa, 1st Place in Hash Category of 2000 High Times Cannabis Cup

Growing Information

Flowering Time: 70-80 days

Preferred Growing Medium: Responds well to training, more than doubles its height in flowering. Produces well and gets extra-potent when let go late.

Patient Expectations

Scent: A spicy Haze scent with notes of sandalwood, bay leaves, garlic, and a light sweetness at times.

Flavor: The flavor is herby and spicy, at times with a citrus bent.

Effects: A true hybrid, it starts out strongly Sativa, with an increase in eye/face pressure, an uptick in heart rate, and racing, disjointed thoughts. While not incapacitating mentally, it does slow things down simply because the mind is being pulled in many different directions. Good for creative pursuits but not for detail-oriented work… The body effects also start off rather early, warming the limbs and core and relaxing the muscles so that they feel loose and floppy. This is a great daytime strain, giving a boost of energy and also relieving body tension.

BLUE DREAM STRAIN INFORMATION

General Information

Type: Sativa-dominant hybrid

Genetics: DJ Short’s Blueberry x Santa Cruz Haze

Geographic Origin: California, USA

Seed Company/Clone: Clone only

Description: A big-yielding and rangy Blueberry cross, Blue Dream has a wonderful Sativa-dominant effects package and retains much of the Blueberry taste from its mother. Developed in the Northern California medical scene, it is becoming very popular in other medical states for its potency and high production.

History

Story:

Awards:

Growing Information

Flowering Time: 60-70 days

Preferred Growing Medium: Grows bigger in hydro, but gets the best flavor in soil. It tends to grow as a single cola unless trained, so low-stress training is a good option to encourage branching and more bush-like growth. Some foxtailing late in flowering is common, showing its Haze lineage.

Patient Expectations

Scent: Sweet and floral berry, often with a hint of sharpness from the Haze.

Flavor: Much like the smell, it’s floral berry with some almost ‘purple’ notes at times (grape, flowers).

Effects: Very uplifting and cerebral, it takes mostly after its Haze father — but in the background exists a strong sense of body relaxation and quality pain relief. Energetic and aware to start, its potency may stil lcatch some users by surprise — there are some rushy tendencies early on. The strain evokes lots of creative energy despite occasional bouts of scatter-brained distraction. Solid body relief seems to increase as it goes along, building until it becomes more of an Indica feeling to finish; warm and relaxed.

STRAWBERRY COUGH STRAIN INFORMATION

General Information

Type: Sativa-dominant hybrid

Genetics: Strawberry Fields x Haze

Geographic Origin: Connecticut, USA

Seed Company/Clone: Kyle Kushman’s Strawberry Cough (KKSC) is clone-only, though Dutch Passion released a seed version.

Description: Known for its sweet and Hazy smell, this special clone-only strain was discovered by chance and went on to become a High times Strain of the Year in 2005 while also becoming a major piece in breeding projects for its collection of terpenes. The 100% Indica Strawberry Fields mother lends stoutness, weight, and that lovely sweetness to the strain, while the Haze seems to contribute the majority of the effects.

History

Story: Kyle Kushman (the widely-accepted source of the strain) received a box of clones from an inexperienced friend and thought nothing of it until he noticed a strong aroma of strawberries in the box. He held onto the clones and it turned out to be a pretty special and unique plant.

Awards: 2005 High Times Top 10 Strain of the Year

Growing Information

Flowering Time: 8-9 weeks for the original clone, seed versions can finish earlier if they’re Strawberry Fields-dominant.

Preferred Growing Medium: Grows well anywhere, it’s a hearty plant thanks to the Indica side of its parentage, branching out and staying relatively short throughout its life cycle. Good for SCROG setups, not advisable for SOG due to the side branching.

Patient Expectations

Scent: The sweet berry cream elements dominate, but there is a sharp Haze in the background.

Flavor: Slightly flowery and almost soapy at times, there is a bit of fruity sweetness, but it changes places from the smell and takes its turn in the background.

Effects: Uplifting and cerebral, bordering on trippy at times… the Haze definitely comes through most strongly in the experience. It does carry a solid body relaxation component, but ultimately it’s a head-centric strain.
