Double Gum Medical Marijuana Strain Review

From: The Herbal Center

Grade: B-

Type: Mostly Indica Hybrid, a refined Bubblegum from White Label Seeds

Price: $50/8th

Appearance: (4/10) Not outwardly trich-covered, this strain was a massive chunky green and orange block of cannabis that was among the most dense and dry samples we’ve ever had. Under-developed seeds were found throughout the sample and it was almost entirely clear trich heads, indicating an early harvest.

Aroma: (7/10) Very nice and super sweet Bubblegum smell, one of the most uncanny gum smells around. It turned a bit more fruity when ground and lost the saccharine sweetness.

Taste: (7/10) Though it had traces of that strong sweetness and the actual gum flavor, this one tasted mostly like a bit of a “fruit punch”, with a blend of fruity and sweet flavors and a flowery finish. The smoke was extremely thick and dense (like the nug) but also had a bit of unwanted harshness that burned the throat.

Effects: This Double Gum was an Indica-dominant experience for sure, with a heavy feeling behind the eyes and a hanging warmth over the body. Sitting gape-mouthed staring at something was not an uncommon effect, and the heavy almost wobbly head made sitting way more satisfying than moving around. It was functional enough but it was much nicer to sit on the couch and just enjoy it. Appetite stimulation was evident, and this was basically a typical Indica effects package thould be nice for an evening session.

Duration: Medium-Long, 2 – 2.5 hours

Medicinal Traits: (We are NOT doctors – personal opinion ONLY) General relaxation, muscle tension, pain relief, sleep aid, appetite stimulation

Overall: This strain was so Indica in every way, with its super dense and blocky nug structure, its sweet scent, and its heavy couchlock-inducing effects. While it wasn’t our favorite in terms of a daily use medication, it would be great for those days where you want to do nothing but sit around and relax, or days when pain or loss of appetite make life very difficult. The flaws with the grow robbed this strain of some of its potential, but it was still rather potent and did the job, even if the experience wasn’t all that it could have been.

Skunk 1 x NL #5 Medical Marijuana Strain Review

From: Mile High Medical

Grade: B-

Type: Hybrid [Skunk leans to sativa side and Northern Lights is indica]

Price: $40/8th

Appearance: (5/10) This sample was a bit too whispy and extremely dry. It didn’t look bad, just average for medicinal grade marijuana with a low trichome count.

Aroma: (6/10) Earthy and fruity, some of the classic NL smells, but not the skunk we love.

Taste: (5/10) It was very smooth and had average expansion, but the taste was very muted. Woody, earthy, spicey.

Effects: Body high and medicinal effects are the dominant experience. For 15 – 20 minutes it feels like this strain is working its way to the top, but you never end up reaching it. The skunk sativa doesn’t present itself very well in tis combo and the come down is quite tiresome.

Duration: Short. 1 – 1.5 hours

Medicinal Traits: (We are NOT doctors – personal opinion ONLY) Insomnia, muscle relaxation.

Overall: The reviewers unanimously felt that this strain should have lived up to its cross a little better. Nobody really picked out the skunk in this cross, but everyone felt the heavy Indica effects and come down. This wasn’t bad medication, it just wasn’t as good as it could have been.

Da Purps Medical Marijuana Strain Review

From: J & J Green Clinic

Grade: B-

Type: Indica-dominant hybrid

Price: $50/8th

Appearance: (4/10) Our sample was very airy in nug structure. Pale-green leaves with very crispy red hairs covering about 60-70% of the nug. Nothing purple to see via naked eye or camera, but we did find bits of seed pods when crumbling.

Aroma: (4/10) The aroma is not overwhelming and had to break the bud to smell its odors. Sugary smell with a hint of citrus.

Taste: (5/10) Sharp smoke with a hazy taste in the beginning and then a potential for strong after-taste of fruity sweetness [about 1/3 of the reviewers reported burnt potpourri instead of the fruity sweetness].

Effects: The specimen is extremely mellow, with a ‘slight’ soaring effect possible in the first 10 minutes. A clear headed medication and functional, but that seems to be from the mild nature and potency. The further in and the more heavy and lazy the effects became.

Duration: Short. 1 – 1.5 hours.

Medicinal Use: (We are NOT doctors – personal opinion ONLY) Good for nausea, appetite, and insomnia. Its mellow potency gave medicinal benefits without much side-effect. Did not do a great job of relieving back/pain ailments.

Overall: Da Purps is a purple strain (Purps Female x Afghani Male) that we’ve heard a lot of good things about. This sample was probably a pheno of Da Purps. It actually had no purple on it, and the bud structure was massively different. It popped and sizzled when combusted and left a heavy feeling on the patient. We will be curious to review another sample of this strain.

Well it’s official, we’ve reviewed 100 strains since our very first site was launched! It’s the perfect time to revisit every grade we’ve given and redistribute some of the grades to get a proper bell curve. We know that not everyone likes or understands a bell curve, but after a lot of deliberation we decided it was in the best interest of the patients and the dispensaries to grade under one. Colorado’s MMJ scene is similar to many other highly competitive and leading environments (law school, med school, MBA school) in that we have collected the best of the best and a normal grading system would just let us know that every strain (or every student) is well above average and deserves a good grade.

The bell curve will spread the bulk of the reviews to the B+ grade and provide for only a handful of A+ and C+ grades (the respective best and worst of the best). There will be no lower grade than a C+ in our system. We plan to perform this exercise every 50 or 100 reviews so that we keep consistent to our mission of providing the most rigorous and honest review depository. Some of the grades will change during this process, but nothing should change more than 1 grade position up or down and we will make a post edit to clearly mark the orginal grade and the modified grade and date.

As always, be sure to make comments below and share your opinions. We know not everyone will agree with our choices and grading system but we feel this is the best possible grading structure. As time goes by every KindReviews.com reader will know that the review grade on every strain stands against every other strain in our database. That is how we are different.

UPDATE 9/2/10: Readers, you’ve probably noticed that we cleaned out our A+ section… Basically, the A+’s that existed are being classified as historical reviews because the medicine is either no longer available, has since been re-reviewed and lowered, or simply wasn’t reviewed under the current (and we believe the best) methodology of a three reviewer team. Because we strongly believe that only the very top strains should get a KindReviews A+, we are starting fresh post-HB 1284 and the changes it brought with no A+ reviews. This way you can be assured that when the next A+ rolls around, it was unanimous among our staff and is truly the absolute top level of medical marijuana you will see in the state. I hope you understand.

To any shops who have had their A+’s removed, please don’t take it as a sign of disrespect — we (like you) are trying to continually improve our methods and felt that this was necessary in order to keep the intent of the site intact, namely, functioning as a patient’s guide to finding the best medication. When strains have an A+ but are no longer being produced or are not readily-available, it can send patients on a goose chase that isn’t productive for anyone. We hope that a fresh start in this regard will help to push MMCs to reach a higher standard… we’ll surely have a new crop of A+’s by this time next year.

We will also be performing another Bell Curve adjustment soon, so if you see grades shifting around, that’s what happened. As always, feel free to share any thoughts in the comments section — we welcome your feedback!

From: Breckenridge Cannabis Club

Grade: B-

Type: Hybrid – (ranges from sativa heavy to indica heavy depending on the seed/clone breeding) [Sweet Pink Grapefruit x DJ Shorts Blueberry] x Grapefruit

Price: Call to ask

Appearance: Not too special, kind of blah for these days. Was good and dry.

Aroma: Sweet and pungent almost like a good blueberry – berries in general.

Taste: Similar to smell, a sweet and sour tinge.

Buzz Type: Felt a little more sativa dominant. A nice strong start that made me kind of dizzy and admittedly aimed my mind in some strange directions. Two troughs and two crests in this wave, drowsy/lazy, then motivated…twice. While in a crest phase, I was able to play my musical instrument with noticeable skill and focus. The trough phases were better suited for the couch.

Buzz Length: Medium. 1.5 – 2 hours

Medicinal Use: (We are NOT doctors – personal opinion ONLY) Didn’t really assist with my leg pains at all (mix of muscle and nerve). Good for focus and mental acuity, but those attributes are mostly appreciated while I’m getting good pain relief.

Overall: Sort of energetic but with the up and down it’s not one I would pick for pure energy with the other options out there. I’ve had better Sweet Tooth examples, like the one from Botanic Labs (though not reviewed here).
