Sour Kush Medical Marijuana Strain Review

From: Green Dream Health Services

Grade: A-

Type: Sativa-dominant hybrid, generally Sour Diesel x OG Kush, but there are variations out there with different parentage and the same name

Price: $50/8th

Appearance: (8.25/10)  This sample was made up entirely of dense, round, pinecone-like nugs that were clearly Kush in lineage just based on the way they looked.  The colors were dark overall, with deep green and purple comprising most of the leaf and calyx surfaces.  However, it was very covered in cloudy/ambered trichomes (great harvest timing) and strong orange hairs that gave it a bit of a yellow cast overall.  The structure was just perfect, dense and well-dried.  The only real flaw were the tiny seeds we spotted in areas, but it wasn’t a very bad problem overall, we only saw a few.

Aroma: (7.5/10)  While we didn’t really pick up on either of the parent strains (maybe a bit of Kush, as there was a body odor + spice smell post-grind that reminded us of some Kushes), it was still a pleasing and fairly pungent scent.  Pre-grind it was a piney aroma with a spicy background, post-grind it accentuated the spice and brought out more of an anise/fennel/cinnamon smell along with that aforementioned funk.

Taste: (6.5/10)  A spicy, vegetal, almost garlic-like flavor on the forefront, with a slight sweetness and hints of citrus to finish.  It didn’t taste bad at any point really, but lost flavor after the first few hits, and was never terribly pungent to begin with.  It got a bit harsh late in the session and made us cough a bit, but wasn’t distinctly harsh.  The final ash was near-white and very fluffy, so it had a quality flush.  Just wasn’t that appealing to us and left us wanting that uber-fuely Sour Kush we’ve had in the past.

Effects: Mentally clear and functional in the sense that thoughts flowed freely and didn’t seem influenced much by the med, but not functional in the sense that we just wanted to stay sitting and absorb the world around us.  Physically it started off with warmth in the head and a sort of massaging feeling along the sides of the head and neck.  Some visual enhancement, some mood elevation, and strong, pulsing body waves were the predominant effects.  As it went on, it became a bit less clear-feeling, slowing us down mentally to a crawl at times and making motor skills a bit iffy.  It faded relatively quickly from there though, and finished clean and not drowsy.

Duration: Medium, 2 – 2.5 hours

Medicinal Traits: (We are NOT doctors – personal opinion ONLY)  Anti-anxiety, mood elevation, body relaxation, and some ocular attention.

Overall: This one didn’t quite hit the sweet spot with most of our staff, but one reviewer absolutely loved it and said it was one of his favorites.  So take that as a sign that it’s certainly quality and has a lot to offer depending on the situation and body chemistry.  The highlight for most of us was the overall soundness of structure and trichome coverage — this was a very appealing sample visually.  We missed the strong, sharp smell and flavor of previous Sour Kushes we’ve had, but it was still solid.  Not many flaws to this one, it’s recommended as an early evening type of med due to the couchlock tendencies… it leaves you plenty social and positive, and functional if needed.

Is it Sour Diesel x Bubba Kush?

Honestly have no idea on this one… the effect, the coloring, and the structure would have me personally leaning towards a Bubba cross, but that’s not a common one (it’s normally called Bubba Diesel or something in that case). We’ve had a Sour Kush that was (Soma’s NYCD x Abusive’s OG Kush aka LA Kush), but the standard cross for this strain as far as I’m aware is Sour Diesel x OG Kush. DNA Genetics released a Sour Kush that they initially had labeled as Bubba x Sour Diesel, but it’s been changed on their website/seed company listings to “Sour Diesel x reversed OG Kush”. Ha, they also got some negative feedback after randomly deciding to call that Sour Kush “Headband” and pissing off half of California, who absolutely treasure the real 707 Headband cut.

The joys of figuring out strain lineage…
