S.A.G.E. Medical Marijuana Strain Review

FromCherry Creek Health

Grade:  B+

Type:  Sativa-Dominant Hybrid, Afghanistan x Haze (reportedly “Big Sur Holy”, a Cali variety), stands for “Sativa-Afghani Genetic Equilibrium”, from THSeeds.

Price:  $55 member/$60 non-member

Appearance:  (7.5/10)  This strain was a pale frosty green that looked almost yellow, with lots of long light orange pistils.  It wasn’t loaded with trichs, but they were certainly evident upon closer inspection and contributed to the yellowish cast.  It was rather dry and not particularly dense, so it crumbled when heavily handled.

Aroma:  (7.5/10)  A non-descript woody and herby (like bay leaves or actual sage) smell when in the jar gave way to a more exciting almost sweet citrus-pine that our reviewers weren’t expecting and enjoyed greatly when the sample was ground or cut up.  Average pungency made this one a fairly average sample smell-wise, but it was certainly a solid example of the strain.

Taste: (5/10)  There was some disagreement here – one reviewer enjoyed the taste and remarked that it was better than the previous S.A.G.E. from Wellspring, while the other simply did not enjoy it, possibly just as a matter of personal preference.  The flavor was much like the smell, with woody and herby flavors but also a slightly sweet component to finish.  It was moderately harsh but burned to a nice extremely light gray ash, indicating a solid flush.

Effects:  This strain hit rather strongly behind the eyes almost immediately, making them water and burn ever so slightly.  Also coming on strong early was a pulsing, warming body high that made its way up to the face.  It was so strong in the eyes that it made our reviewers very conscious of being medicated and started a bit of paranoia… probably not the best for professional or new social situations.  Despite that, it was calm and functional overall, with a vibrating/pulsing body high that went nicely with the cerebral aspects of the strain.  A long ‘linger’ in the eyes made this one an above-average scorer in duration.

Duration:  Long, 2.5 – 3 hours

Medicinal Traits: (We are NOT doctors – personal opinion ONLY)  Mild pain relief, relaxation, possible ocular relief (since it was so eye-focused).

Overall:  A strong initial hit followed by 2-2.5 hours of solid hybrid body relief and relaxation, this strain definitely displayed both sides of its lineage.  The strong and cerebral head high gave way to a more Indica-feeling relaxed body profile after about 30-45 minutes and maintained that throughout the duration.  Basically average in terms of effects (but not in a bad way), it provided balanced relief and would be enjoyed by most patients who aren’t concerned too much about taste or smell and aren’t looking for serious pain relief.

I raised six different varieties and S.A.G.E. was one. While the other stains were relatively resistant to attack, the S.A.G.E. quickly fell under attack to both spider mites and mildew. It was badly ravaged while the other plants stood straight and true. The mites seemed to be attracted to the plants particular smell. The buds that did make it were quite tasty and the high was well balanced. If you raise this one, keep your eye on it and have your fungicide and bug juice ready!
